At the beginning of a round, a player must place a bet within the table limits. The casino chips can be put on any of the three options the player believes will win: Player, Banker, or Tie. The host then distributes two upcards to the Dealer and two to the Player boxes on the table, so there will be four cards on the table initially. Based on the total score of each hand, the dealer then decides whether to add the third card to the player/banker hand.

Card and hand scoring in baccarat

Each card has a value in baccarat:

• 2 to 9 cards are worth their pip values, e.g. a 5 gives five points to the hand total
• 10, Jack, Queen and King count as zero. They do not increase the hand score
• Ace is worth 1 point

Interestingly, the overall hand score is not always comprised of the sum of all its cards. To calculate the total of either card set, you should add the card values. For example, 4/K gives five points in total. However, if you get a two-digit number as a result, the left number is deducted, and the right number will represent the hand’s score e.g. an 8/8/7 hand gives 23 when added; ‘2’ is taken, and the final hand score turns out to be 3.

As you might have guessed, neither hand (Player/Banker) can be higher than 9 at the end of the round because everything greater than that will undergo the deduction procedures described above.

Hand calculations are an integral part of the third-party rule applied automatically by the dealer. The winning hand in live baccarat

After the results are summed up, the game software shows the winning hand. The classic Punto Banco rules read that the hand with a higher score is considered the winner. In some situations, a round can result in a tie.

Third-card rule in baccarat

This rule dictates when the banker/player hand must receive the third card. This provision looks complex at first glance, but the most important thing is that it is predetermined and automatic, with no decision-making by the player. The third-card rule applies to the Player hand first. Here are the main principles behind it:

• If the Player’s hand two-card total is 0–5, the third card is dealt to the Player.
• If the Player’s hand two-card total is 6 or 7, the Player’s hand stands and does not draw the third card.
• If the Player has an 8 or 9 (a ‘Natural’), both the Player and the Banker hands stand, and no more cards are drawn.

After that, the dealer decides if the third-card rule must apply to the Banker hand. If the player stands (i.e., has 6 or 7), the banker follows the same rule as the player: draw on 0–5 and stand on 6–7. However, if the player does draw the third card, the dealer's action depends on the banker's initial total and what the player's third card is. This is an algorithm for this gameplay situation:

• If the Banker hand's total is 2 or less, the Banker draws a card, regardless of what the Player's third card is.
• If the Banker hand's total is 3, the Banker draws the third card unless the Player's third card is an 8.
• If the Banker hand's total is 4, the Banker draws the third card if the Player's third card is 2–7.
• If the Banker hand's total is 5, the Banker draws the third card if the Player's third card is 4–7.
• If the Banker hand's total is 6, the Banker draws the third card if the Player's third card is 6 or 7.
• If the Banker hand's total is 7, the Banker stands.

Payouts in live baccarat

By default, punto banco variations have uniform payouts. A winning Player hand awards 1:1, while the winning Banker pays out 0.95:1 (an even-money payout plus a 5% commission). Some variants to be reviewed below come without the Banker commission and award uniformly across both hands; however, variations like that are pretty rare.

As for the Tie bet, you will earn 8:1 if you win this kind of bet. Also, some online or live baccarat games have an increased cash prize of 9:1 for the winning Tie. Bet sizes in live baccarat

Player/Banker Pair

The Player Pair stake wins if the two initial cards in the Player’s hand form a pair. Similarly, the Banker Pair wins if this two-card hand has identical cards. This side bet is further divided into three subtypes (three possible outcomes):

• Perfect Pair: Two identical cards, e.g. two Queen of Spades

Normal payouts are 11:1 for any outcome. Notably, if these subgroups act separately on the baccarat table, payouts are different, e.g. Mixed Pair pays 5:1 or so, while Perfect Pair is the most expensive option because its hit probability is very low. Either/Perfect Pair

The payout for this combination is 5:1. Player/Banker bonus

This side bet is going to bring you profit if the hand you have wagered has a natural (8 or 9 points) OR it outstrips the other hand by at least four points. So, you win this side bet and get a payout based on the following outcomes:

• Natural win (8,9 points): the payout is 1:1
• A non-natural (NN) win by 4 points: 1:1
• NN win by 5 points: 2:1
• NN win by 6 points: 4:1
• NN win by 7 points: 6:1
• NN win by 8 points: 10:1
• NN win by 9 points: 30:1

To make it clear, this side bet is applicable to any total number of cards in both hands: 4, 5 and 6.

Super 8 bet

This is a rare side bet found in some of the best live baccarat games from Pragmatic Play. You are permitted to make this optional bet without the main bet. Super 8 wins if the first two cards in the Player or Banker hand form a natural 8. It offers different prizes depending on the outcome:

• Player/Banker loses with a natural 8: 6:1

Player/Banker 6

Roadmaps in baccarat live

Every live game gives access to statistics of the previous rounds. Some games display a history of 100 rounds, while others show the last 30 results.
